Matina Kalcounis-Rueppell

Matina Kalcounis-Rueppell is the founding college dean and vice-provost of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences at the University of Alberta. She is an internationally recognized scientist whose research focuses on the biology of acoustic communication in bats and mice.

Matina has led two scientific societies and has been recognized with awards for her efforts in research, education and academic leadership, most recently as the recipient of the American Society of Mammalogists 2024 Joseph Grinnell Award for excellence in education. She is chair of the board of directors of the Telus World of Science – Edmonton, and is a director on the board of the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute.

Formerly, Matina was the first female dean of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Science. Prior to coming to the U of A in 2019, she was the head of the Biology Department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
