Darryl Short (Shorty) is a Red Seal and Blue Seal–certified machinist and a 2011 graduate of NAIT’s Mechanical Engineering Technology program. He is the owner of Karma Machining and Manufacturing and co-founder of Karma Medical Products, where he applies lean manufacturing to meet the three things, customers value most: on-time delivery, perfect parts, and the lowest possible cost. Under his leadership, Karma has grown into a trusted supplier of high-precision components and the developer of FEPSim, an FDA Class I and Health Canada–licensed medical device now sold in Canada and the U.S., with international expansion underway.

Alongside his business ventures, Darryl has been actively producing educational content—podcasts, articles, and discussions—focused on additive manufacturing in polymers, metals, and related mechanical/manufacturing engineering disciplines. His goal has been to help local, national, and international audiences understand and trust additive manufacturing as a powerful tool for innovation.

Darryl is eager to bring this blend of practical industry experience, entrepreneurial leadership, and public education to a board role, supporting the University of Alberta’s efforts to advance 3D manufacturing and foster innovation across sectors.
