Industry-Informed, Globally Connected Research

The AbAMI Hub’s research priorities are driven and informed by industry needs. They are led by Alberta’s academic institutions in partnership with industry, other research institutions, and international partners. The AbAMI Hub brings together engineers, scientists, and industry practitioners with expertise across major advanced manufacturing processes to design, develop, and deploy new technologies that close critical gaps in the sector.

Responsive to the Full Manufacturing Value Chain

The AbAMI Hub’s research activities span the entire value chain and are designed to directly address the needs of Alberta manufacturing industry partners.

  • Targeted Industry Sectors
    • Conventional and renewable energy systems;
    • Mining and materials extraction;
    • Construction, buildings, and infrastructure; and
    • Security, defence, and aerospace.
Current Research Activities

Within these sectors, the Hub’s current priorities include:

  • Feedstock materials – developing reliable, cost-effective inputs for manufacturing and applying circular economy principles.
  • Fabrication processes – advancing welding, laser technologies, thermal spraying, 3D printing, and robotic integration.
  • Testing and prototyping – validating performance and service integrity
  • Digital and AI-enabled systems – integrating controls, sensing, health monitoring, and autonomous manufacturing.
Driving Competitiveness and Gowth

By focusing on these areas, the AbAMI Hub is integrating enabling technologies, such as AI, automation, and networked autonomous systems at scale. This work improves efficiency, productivity and competitiveness for Alberta’s manufacturing industry and beyond.
